Tensions flared in Indianapolis on Tuesday night as Caitlin Clark appeared to have a heated exchange with a referee following the Indiana Fever’s narrow 81-80 loss to the Dallas Wings.
With less than two seconds on the clock and the Fever trailing by one, Kelsey Mitchell launched a last-gasp shot that hit the backboard, sealing the Wings’ road win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. As the celebration began, Clark — sidelined with a groin injury — stepped onto the court and approached official Amy Bonner. Photos captured what looked like a chippy interaction, with Bonner seemingly gesturing toward the bench.
Clark, no stranger to challenging officials, wasn’t the only one questioning the calls. Head coach Stephanie White voiced frustration over what she described as a “double standard” in the game’s physical play. “If it’s going to be physical, then allow both teams to be physical… I didn’t feel like it was consistent,” White told the Indy Star. She reportedly approached referees multiple times during breaks to seek clarity on foul calls.
The game also featured a controversial moment involving Aliyah Boston, last year’s first overall pick, who picked up three fouls, including one disputed call against Wings center Li Yueru.

With the loss, the Fever dropped to 18-15, sitting sixth in the WNBA standings. Clark, the reigning Rookie of the Year, remains without a return date after being sidelined since July 15. Averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists in 13 games this season, her eventual comeback could prove crucial as Indiana fights to secure a strong playoff position, starting with Friday’s clash against the Mystics.
