Virat Kohli inspires Delhi to a dramatic thriller win over Gujarat
Virat Kohli once again proved why his presence can transform a contest, producing a match-defining performance as Delhi pulled off a thrilling seven-run victory over Gujarat in a tense Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite 2025–26 Group D clash at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. What began as a seemingly comfortable chase for Gujarat turned into a dramatic collapse, sparked by Delhi’s intensity and capped by electric celebrations that later went viral on social media.
At the heart of the win was Kohli’s authoritative knock of 77 runs, an innings that blended composure, experience, and timely aggression. The effort carried added significance as Kohli reached the landmark of 1,000 runs in the tournament in just his 15th innings, a remarkable achievement that underlined his consistency in the format. Chasing a target of 255, Gujarat made a steady start through openers Aarya Desai and wicketkeeper Urvil Patel. The pair stitched together a 67-run opening stand, setting a solid platform. However, the momentum shifted when young Delhi pacer Prince Yadav struck to remove Patel, injecting belief into the fielding side. Aarya Desai then combined with Abhishek Desai for a further 54 runs for the second wicket, keeping Gujarat on course.
Delhi clawed their way back when Navdeep Saini dismissed Aarya in the 25th over, breaking the partnership at a crucial moment. Even then, Gujarat appeared well placed, needing 134 runs from the remaining half of their innings with eight wickets still in hand. What followed, however, was a dramatic change in fortunes.
Gujarat stumbled to 144 for 5, suddenly losing grip of the chase. Saurav Chauhan and Vishal Jayswal attempted to rebuild, adding a valuable 69-run stand for the sixth wicket. Their partnership brought Gujarat back into contention, and as the game entered its closing stages, the pressure mounted on both sides.
In the 42nd over, before Chauhan was dismissed by Simarjeet Singh, Gujarat required 42 runs from 51 balls—a scenario that still favoured the batting side. But Chauhan’s wicket proved to be the turning point. Once he fell, the chase unraveled rapidly. Wickets tumbled in quick succession as Delhi’s bowlers held their nerve and tightened the screws.

The final blow came when Ravi Bishnoi, Gujarat’s last hope, was caught by Kohli off Prince Yadav’s bowling. As Kohli completed the catch, the Delhi camp erupted. The outfield turned into a scene of pure emotion—players sprinted towards each other, fists pumped, and celebrations spilled over in raw, unfiltered joy. Kohli and Prince, in particular, shared a moment that captured the spirit of the victory, symbolising the blend of experience and youth that powered Delhi home.
Gujarat were eventually bowled out for 247, falling eight runs short in a match that swung dramatically in the final overs. What looked like a manageable chase had turned into a nightmare, thanks to Delhi’s relentless pressure and belief.
