Nick Kyrgios unexpectedly came to the defense of Stefanos Tsitsipas after the Greek star endured another disappointing run at the 2025 US Open. The support was surprising given the pair’s infamous bust-up during their fiery clash at Wimbledon 2022.
Tsitsipas’ recent form has been far from his past standards as a two-time Grand Slam finalist and former top-10 regular. His struggles continued at Flushing Meadows, where he exited in the second round after a grueling five-set defeat to World No. 56 Daniel Altmaier.
To make matters worse, Tsitsipas drew further criticism after confronting Altmaier over his use of the underarm serve. While the German remained calm and avoided escalation, the Greek’s reaction sparked heavy backlash.
Adding fuel to the fire, a tennis page on Instagram trolled Tsitsipas with a sarcastic post echoing what critics have long said about his chances of ever winning a Major.
“The haters said he couldn’t do it. The haters said he’d never win a grand slam. And they were correct. Honestly great call from the haters,” the caption read.
Clearly irked by the caption, Kyrgios , who is currently out of action, entered the comments and hit back. The Australian brought up Tsitsipas’ earnings to imply that the Greek has had a successful career so far despite not having won a Grand Slam title.
“Guys made over 30 mill USD. Haters will continue to hate whilst sitting with their hands in their pants,” Kyrgios commented.

“Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ fiery Wimbledon 2022 clash turned explosive, with the Greek labeling the Aussie a ‘bully.’”
Nick Kyrgios’ 2022 Wimbledon run was unforgettable, as he broke new ground by reaching his first-ever Grand Slam final on the iconic grass courts. But his journey wasn’t without drama. One of the biggest talking points came during his heated 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Kyrgios’ constant antics and fiery behavior rattled the Greek star, throwing off his rhythm and composure. After the match, Tsitsipas didn’t hold back when reflecting on the chaotic battle.
“It’s constant bullying, that’s what he (Kyrgios) does. He bullies the opponents. He was probably a bully at school himself. I don’t like bullies. I don’t like people that put other people down. He has some good traits in his character, as well. But he also has a very evil side to him.”
Stefanos Tsitsipas didn’t hold back when reflecting on Nick Kyrgios during Netflix’s Break Point, criticizing the Australian’s behavior from their fiery Wimbledon 2022 clash. But his comments sparked backlash, as many accused him of racism after he described Kyrgios’ style as “uneducated” and claimed he brought an “NBA basketball attitude” into tennis.
The Greek later clarified his remarks in a social media post.
“It has come to my attention that some individuals have misinterpreted my comments regarding Nick Kyrgios … insinuating racism where none exists. I want to emphasize that I harbor no prejudice towards anyone based on their background, ethnicity, or interests. I deeply regret if my words were misinterpreted or caused offense, as that was never my intention.”
